It’s Go Time!

Friday, October 24th, 2003

Water broke at 4:30 AM, confirmed with doctor at 8:45 AM, called babysitter (a family friend), and am getting ready for the hospital. It’s go time!

The Overnight Report

Wednesday, October 22nd, 2003

Last night went very well. She ate at 9:45 PM, 1:44 AM, 4:30 AM, and 9:20 AM. The 4:30 AM feeding finished in a timely manner, but she wanted to stay up with me until 6 AM. That was some nice father-daughter time.

Biggest Surprise

Tuesday, October 21st, 2003

If I had to pick one thing that surprised me most about having a baby, it would have to be our dog Molly. She is insanely protective of me, to the point where our other dog cannot come near me and I cannot pet her without Ginger facing some sort of retribution. I was deathly [...]

She’s Ours!

Tuesday, October 21st, 2003

For any of you who might have been worried about the adoption process, fear not! We obtained the waiver of rights from both parents yesterday, which means they’ve unconditionally given up any rights they had to our dear little Kimberly. In Arizona, the birth parents have up to 72 hours to change their mind and [...]

The Overnight Report

Tuesday, October 21st, 2003

Last night saw regular feedings at 8:10 PM, 11:15 PM, 2:15 AM, 5:45 AM, and 6:45 AM (she still looked hungry so we tried feeding her another bottle, but she only drank—ate?— ½ an ounce). The feedings generally went off without a hitch, although the 2:15 AM one left her still wide awake so Sandi [...]

Photos Are Available!

Sunday, October 19th, 2003

The two pictures below were just to whet your appetite. You can find all the pictures you want of young Kimberly Rose Brown online now. Sorry about the delay, but it’s been a busy couple of days if you can believe it. Heheh.

She’s Here!!

Friday, October 17th, 2003

At 1:00 PM, Kimberly Rose Brown was born. She weighs 7 lbs. 15 oz. and is 20¼ in. I got to watch the cesarean section as did Sandi and also videotaped it. Some day, when I have time, I may put up a short segment of the video but I wouldn’t hold my breath if [...]

Big Day Tomorrow!

Thursday, October 16th, 2003

Tomorrow is the day that Kimberly Rose Brown will be born. It’s a scheduled cesarean section and I will try to get pictures up here ASAP as well as all the pertinent details. We are so excited. To think that this is the last night of being a childless couple! It’s amazing to think about. [...]

Doctor Visit Report

Wednesday, October 15th, 2003

We just got back from the doctor’s and all is well. It turns out that Sandi is progressing very slowly at this point: Annie is still at station -2, Sandi is dilated to a little more than 1 cm, and her cervix is only 75% effaced (up from 70%). In other words, it’s going to [...]

Oh Boy!

Tuesday, October 14th, 2003

Sandi’s mucus plug came out today at school. If you don’t know what that means, it’s just one more indicator that the end of her pregnancy is near. Next is either full-on contractions or water breakage.

Poem for the Girls

Monday, October 13th, 2003

Two little girls Too full of zest To stop and rest Two heads of curls. [NOTE: I wrote this poem to go on the four walls of the nursery. Some have objected that I didn't know for sure that the girls will have curly hair. I suppose, but give me a little poetic license here. [...]

Contractions

Sunday, October 12th, 2003

Sandi’s been having contractions about every ten minutes, which is within the non-labor zone, but lots of cramping in general. The baby is extremely low—her belly/womb has created a cliff almost contiguous with her pubis. We’re going to pack her hospital suitcase so that we’re ready should it happen soon. In other words, we’re getting [...]

October Showers

Saturday, October 11th, 2003

EXTRA! EXTRA! Neighbors overcome by generosity! Sandi’s had two showers in the last two weeks, I’ve had one, and several other people have independently given us gifts. Holy moly! We now have so many bibs that they’re practically disposable. Don’t even ask about receiving blankets and washcloths. To anyone that might be reading this that [...]

Doctor Visit

Saturday, October 11th, 2003

We went to the doctor on Wednesday for the last biweekly checkup—we’re on a weekly schedule now—and it was quite eventful! The doctor checked her cervix, discovering that she’s dilated to 1 cm and 70% effaced (which means that her cervix has shed 70% of its mass). The doctor in his probing could feel Annie’s [...]

Pre-Labor

Tuesday, October 7th, 2003

The birth mother of our adopted child had a bit of pre-labor yesterday. We got the first test of the high alert and I think we passed admirably. Geesh, it’s getting really near!

The Haps

Wednesday, October 1st, 2003

We finished our last birthing class last night and it was the one about breathing. It was also the first time that I really started to doubt my abilities as coach for Sandi. The coach’s responsibility is to put the pregnant woman at ease and help her through the delivery process in any way necessary. [...]
