What Could Have Been
By bbrown | March 14, 2004
Today would have been Elizabeth’s first birthday, according to her due date of March 14, 2003. For those unfamiliar with our history, Elizabeth Irene Brown was the daughter we never had. She miscarried on August 19, 2002 after four months of gestation. We eagerly awaited the ultrasound that would tell us her gender; we found it out after her remains were examined.
We loved her so much, though we never got a chance to meet her. I look into Annie’s eyes and wonder if Elizabeth would have been her. Annie is a joy that arose from a most difficult time in our lives. That is why her middle name is Elizabeth.
I look at The Girls and think that they could have had a big sister. And we could have had our hands even fuller. Alas, they didn’t and we don’t.
Elizabeth Irene Brown, your parents miss you.
