3 days in

By sandi | December 11, 2008

It is crazy to think that Paul has only been in the US for three days. It seems like he has been here longer. He fits in very well with us and we all adore him.

He is still very afraid of the dogs and cries at the sight of them moving around. Which, as you can imagine, happens often.

He is having a hard time acclimating to American food. He was fed porridge, kind of like a thick chicken soup with tiny noodles and shredded veggies in it, two times a day and there isn’t much food I make that resembles that porridge. He currently enjoys oatmeal, french fries, and chicken noodle soup. He won’t eat any fruits and veggies straight up. He has his appointment with the doctor tomorrow and I am anxious to hear what he recommends we do with Mr. Fussy Eater. I have never really experienced this before. My kids will eat anything they just don’t eat much of it.

Today we went out to get pictures of our family and some of Paul alone for his 1 year old pictures. Everything is a new experience for him and he doesn’t like quick movements. Unfortunately we had a very animated photographer and she scared Paul quite often. He was good during the family photo while Mommy or Daddy was holding him.

He struggled with his individual pictures. My poor guy. We eventually gave up and saved him.
We got this gorgeous one.

And of course we got one of our gorgeous four kids

We are still fighting with airlines and trying to figure out who is going to take the blame for my two bags who are still missing in action. I am really getting to a breaking point in this whole thing. I hope to get this resolved tomorrow.

We are still hoping that Paul is going to catch on to sleeping through the night. We may seem delusional but that happens when the most sleep you have gotten in a row is 5.5 hours in over a week.

Great travel journal, Sandi–thanks for the story of your time there. That last photo of the 4 kids is great, but I think I think Paul’s face looks a wee bit like “I think I’m on a sleed that’s going to fast.” :)

Those are fabulous photos! Ugh, why do photographers have to be annoyingly animated :) . Glad to hear most everything is going well, I hope you get more sleep tonight and your luggage tomorrow!

Cute pix!!! As for the food…Mari definitely preferred oatmeal to rice cereal and I also found that barley cereal was a big hit. My pediatrician (has a family member adopted from Eth) recommended starting with the root veggies first then adding in some of the others. We did squash and sweet potatoes mixed with barley cereal and she loved it. Of course, she would eat about anything but those were her favs. I’ve also heard lentils are good, so maybe a lentil soup? Might ask on the group board…I know Chrisy K had some picky issues but Elias was a little older. Bet there are others out there with picky eaters (not every kid is a food vaccuum like Mari!).

I got Maya’s shirt at Marshall’s but I just saw it at Kohl’s last week, too.

Love the pictures… I know that it was hard to get Geoff’s last picture- for sure not the same situation, but it may be partly the age and all! I love the family picture and the one of him on his own- he looks scared to death without his mommy right now! Things will surely change- he is surrounded by such love! Big Hugs-

Great family pics, and such great pictures of Ethiopia. Paul is incredibly cute. Zufan also weighed in at exactly 17 lbs when she came home at 14 months.
