Last night in Ethiopia

By sandi | December 11, 2008

Tonight is the last night we will be sleeping in Ethiopia. I am very ready to go home. We have lived for the past 7 days out of carry-on luggage and it hasn’t been fun. We don’t have extra clothes, we don’t have anything we meticulously packed for Paul or ourselves. I am so glad that we purchased travel insurance. This has been a huge inconvience.

I miss the Girls like crazy and it is obvious from our conversations that they are completely anxious for us to return home with Paul. Tonight they asked for us to put Paul on the phone and while it was hard to get him to speak, hearing them squeal in delight when they heard him was so comforting. We are near the moment we will back in each others daily sight and that is so exciting.

Leaving this remote corner of the world has me filled with conflicting feelings. It has been an amazing experience and I have a strong affection for Ethiopia, it has definitely become part of me. I will treasure the days I have spent here because I may never be back and even if I do come back in 20 years or so, the country will be so different. The city is growing and changing each day and I am sure that progress will be made in time. This entire experience has shown me how thankful I am for each and every blessing I have. Not that I wasn’t thankful before but now that thankfulness extends to even the simplest of things.

On the flip side I am ready to go back to the states where I don’t get nauseous from driving on the streets because of the diesel fumes. I won’t miss the interesting odors that you encounter and the tang all the food has from being cooked over charcoal. I am ready to sleep in my warm home and drive my own car safely around town. I am ready to show Paul all the treasures his new life has. I am ready to begin our happily ever after as six Browns.

Over the past seven days I have created so many wonderful memories. I cannot wait to be home and to experience many more.

Here is a picture of Paul the last night in Ethiopia. He is blissfully sleeping unaware of the change that will be happening tomorrow.
