Paul’s condition

By bbrown | March 23, 2009

On our trip the doctor called to let us know that he needed to talk to us about Paul’s bloodwork. I instantly got worried and wanted to call back but Bill said we should just wait, that everything was fine. We decided to wait until we returned to call back.

Today I took Paul in to hear the results. Paul has an underproductive thyroid. :( This is definitely hard to hear, even though it is better than a lot of the other alternatives it could have been. I will be calling tomorrow to schedule an appointment with a pediatric endocrinologist at Phoenix Children’s Hospital.

It definitely makes sense. While he has been growing since he has been home, he isn’t making huge leaps. He has only gained 4 pounds 1 ounces since he has been home. With the amount of nutrition he is receiving now it should be more.

Thankfully he seems to be developing appropriately so we don’t need to worry about it having effected his mental health yet. We plan to get a hold on this very quickly as to avert this issue entirely.

He also has Hep B antigens. His birth mother most likely had Hep B and he is carrying it. His body will either continue to fight it or develop Hep B. Praying that he is able to fight it. This will be something we continue to monitor over time.

It is never easy to hear or know that your child has a condition. It rocks me to the core. I want the world for him. I want health and happiness for him each day of his life. To know that we now have to deal with this illness daily is upsetting.

I know that tomorrow I will bounce back with the strength I have come to rely on in these times, but tonight my heart is heavy for my little man.

Hang in there. You guys are great parents and will make sure he has excellent care in every way. We have so many people in our family with thyroid disease, and it’s amazing how much they can do for it, and the difference it makes once it’s treated. He really has grown and thrived since you have brought him home, in spite of that, so just think what you can do once it’s treated. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you.

Praying that he fights the Hep B, and the thyroid problem can be easily fixed. You have a strong little man who has fought incredible odds. I have faith he will continue to be a fighter.
    Big hugs.

I’m sorry about the news about his thyroid and potential Hep B diagnosis. I worry about Adia all the time as she has to deal with Hepatitis. Hopefully it won’t be an issue for your son, but if it is-there’s much hope. It just requires a few extra med appointments and some lifestyle decisions that shouldn’t be that big of a deal if he knows about them ahead of time.

As always, you’ll be in our thoughts.

I’m so sorry to hear the Paul has been diagnosed with hypothyroidism. It is something that I struggle with. Fortunately, my treatment has been fairly simple. But I have no idea how they treat it in young children. I’ll be praying for your family–and especially Paul.

Prayers to you all! Perhaps now with the thyroid thing discovered he can make those leaps and bounds! He is obviously a little fighter – and has had to go through so much already, but he is on the right road now, let’s hope!
