Baking day
By sandi | April 7, 2009
I have been trying to do more baking lately. I made a resolution for myself that I would learn more cooking basics and learn to cook more things.
I also want to make time to learn to cook more. I am the kind of cook who can whip something up out of basics, but I want to be the cook that can make a meal that will knock your socks off. I plan to buy a new cookbook each month and concentrate on the recipes within it. I think that this will give me a more complete culinary stock to select from when cooking.
I have read two cookbooks so far this year and while I know that it is already the fourth month of the year, given my life, I am going to say that is still good with my resolution.
The first was Ina Garten’s Barefoot Contessa Cookbook. Where I found the most amazing recipes including one for banana crunch muffins which was the first fruit my son ever ate! The recipes in there were so rich and wonderful and we have found many that are now family favorites.
The second was Artisan Bread in Five Minutes a Day. I have wanted to learn how to make bread for some time. This book doesn’t do all the kneading and resting that regular recipes do and it seems good. I have made it twice now and while the bread has great flavor it is very dense. I think that even this simple formula is something that will take many attempts to get right.

With Easter just around the corner I thought it would be good to do some cookie baking. On Monday we made bird nest cookies.

Later in the day we made sugar cookies.

Today Paul and I made icing so that we could decorate the sugar cookies.

Paul frosting his first sugar cookie.

Annie’s gorgeous basket cookie

Kimberly decorating her bunny.

The finished product.

The Girls really are at such a great age for all this baking. They love spending the time in the kitchen with me. They like to take the time to create cookies that look good. It is neat to see how they have progressed. Their motor skills on decorating cookies has improved a lot over the past couple of years.
I also made some of the most delicious macaroons. Bill never really liked macaroons before he met these little guys. They are so tasty that I am not sure any will be left by Easter.

Sandi understated the deliciousness of the macaroons and my normal dislike of them. I hate coconut—as in I’ll spit it out if I come across it. These macaroons are so fantastic that I understand that I have to take some of that trash in exchange for the party in my mouth.

Yes, bread is the mark of an accomplished baker, in my book. It really is something that you have to keep doing until you get it right.
