Brilliantly Simple
By sandi | December 11, 2012
Did you know my husband is brilliant?
Most people do, but most don’t know that I think he is as well. It is something I keep to myself.
That is not the point of this post just a side bar I thought I would note.
While Annie is highly gifted in the area of language and reading, and abstract mathematical topics, math facts allude her. No idea how, but they do.
She can’t add 8 plus 6 without using her fingers to count up from 8! Subtraction is even worse and multiplication, forget about it.
We have been working on these skills since kindergarten and she just doesn’t get them.
Bill and I were talking about it and we both learned the multiplication tables by simply repeating them over and over. 8 X 6 = 48 is something that comes as easily to my mind as “the rockets red glare.” My mom took the time to record her voice on a cassette tape for me to listen to each night while going to sleep.
My brilliant husband said he could “Generate 144 strings and make a recording of a computer voice verbalizing them.” I am not sure exactly what he did there but he did it within a half hour and now we have all of the multiplication table to play while Annie goes to sleep at night.
See what did I tell you, brilliant.
If you need the times tables and don’t want to pay $9.99 on iTunes for them you are welcome to use the ones Bill made. (They sell each number as a different song.) Follow this link to the times tables.
Let’s just hope these do the trick.
