Bill and I celebrated our 20 wedding anniversary with an Alaskan cruise. I already wrote about the Mendenhall Glacier which was AMAZING, but there were other parts of the trip that were great as well. If you are debating taking an Alaskan cruise and aren’t sure about it, I say go. Especially if you like scenery, wildlife and rain.
Let’s talk about the last part of that first, the rain. It is well documented that I am a desert girl. Rain is not something I love. I can’t imagine living in a place that rains as much as the Pacific northwest of the US does. Did you know that they measure the rainfall in feet there? Yeah, they do! Last year they had 15 feet of rain. It rained almost all the time.
Bill had asked for a horse mask for our anniversary. I don’t even pretend to understand how or why this is the perfect gift for our anniversary but as the loving wife that I am I bought it for him. I gave him his gift when we got on the ship and were unpacking. He was thrilled when he opened it up. While he was slipping his horse head on I slipped a matching one on. Bill was so surprised and happy when he saw me dressed the same. Glad he enjoyed his gift even though I struggle to understand it.
We had a great time on the cruise when we went through the Tracy Arm Fjord. It was so beautiful and like nothing I had seen before. The beautiful blue ice floating along side the boat.
While in the Tracy Arm the cruise director held a Polar Bear club and of course Bill ran to get his swimsuit on. It was in the 30′s and drizzling, (just look at the surface of the pool) and there was snow on all the surrounding mountains and Bill thought that would be a great time for a dip in the outdoor pool. Thankfully the actual pool was heated, see how he is running to jump back in and warm up!
Leaving the fjord we saw the end of the rainbow.
We took a shore excursion in Sitka to go see otter and whales. It was wonderful. We saw otters swimming and even saw one with her baby on her stomach and swimming away. We also saw a mother and calf humpback whale swimming along. It was amazing. I love whales and seeing this mother and child combo was very nice. We even saw puffins flying. It was a neat trip.
Bill was interested in taking a ride on a float plane. The scenery was beautiful as always in Alaska. I can’t say I didn’t enjoy this excursion because it really was beautiful but between our other excursions and the cruise the scenery was very similar. The float plane landed on a pristine lake and the pilot had us get out on the pontoon. This was quite unnerving because the water is freezing and falling in would have been HORRIBLE.
Can you tell from my expression that I am a bit concerned?
The trip was a lot of fun. We really enjoyed our time away and came home to our favorite place of all. Feeling blessed to have a wonderful marriage.
Now we just have to plan what to do with our next milestone anniversary. Italy? China? Hawaii? I think Hawaii would be great for the 25th with the family!
